For the Gear Head

I’m afraid that you gear heads out there will be disappointed. I travel pretty light and pretty cheap.

At the time of this writing I’m using a Nikon D200 camera. The vast majority of my shots are taken using a non-cpu 35-70 Nikkor zoom lens that came as a package with my previous film camera. Sometimes I use a 19mm Vivitar wide angle lens.

For close work I have a set of diopter lenses that I screw onto the Nikkor lens. On very rare occasions I might use a 2X tele-extender with the Nikkor or a 70-300 ProMaster zoom that I have.

I put polarizing filters on all my lenses and I leave them on most of the time.

I'm pretty rough on tripods. I drop them down hillsides, I get them covered in mud, and sometimes I whack them on rocks to dislodge ice that builds up on the legs in the winter.  I can't bring myself to treat a really expensive tripod that way so I mostly carry a forty or fifty buck job from Velbon. Usually it has duct tape on it somewhere.

I have tried several different image editing software packages – Bibble, Lightroom, GIMP, Photoshop, etc. I always fall back to Corel PaintShop. I guess I get the best results from it just because I’ve been using it for years and I’m comfortable with it.

I’m using an Epson R1800 printer at the moment. I mostly print on Moab Entrada Natural Rag Matte paper.
