About My Prints I do all my own printing. I make prints one at a time as I need them - not in batches. I've gone round and round on the issues of signing and numbering my prints. I've finally settled on hand signing (initials really) them in the lower right margin. I also write an ID number in the margin so I know exactly which image file I used to make the print. I write the print number next to the ID. The print number is just a count of how many prints I've made of that image - I don't know if it's really important to know or not, but I do it anyway. I used to title my prints, but I don't bother anymore. My titles tended to sound pretty corny and after hundreds of pictures I got really hard pressed to come up with anything new. All my prints are made using the Giclee (zhee – clay) process. Giclee is a fancy word that just means that they are digitally printed using inks on dry paper rather than traditional photosensitive paper dipped in chemicals. I've noticed lately that many photographers are getting away from using the term Giclee in favor of "pigment on paper". This term has the advantage of being more descriptive and is probably better. It just doesn't have that cool French ring to it. I always use professional archival pigment inks on
high quality fine art papers that are specifically designed for digital
printing. Although this pigment on paper process is relatively new, scientific studies
suggest that properly handled and framed images will last as long or longer
than traditional chemical prints.
